What is DMX512? DMX512 is an abbreviation for Digital Multiple X512, which means multiplexed digital transmission. The DMX512 protocol was first developed by the USITT as a way to control dimmers from consoles using a standard digital interface. Originally developed for stage lighting and control, with advent of Artnet it has now moved to interior architectural, billboards, stadium and concerts lighting.

Common problems and Solutions:
1. How many units of DMX512 decoder can be connected to control?
A：If the DMX512 signal line does a good job of impedance matching (the first and last decoder each add a resistance of about 120Ω), more than 32 units can be connected.
2. When is it necessary to add a signal amplifier?
A: More than 32 DMX512 decoders or more than 150-200 meters (specific distance refer to the actual installation environment) need to be connected a signal amplifier, and the signal amplification can’t exceed 5 times consecutively.
3.If the signal cable is not shielded, can the signal be transmitted? What is the transmission distance?
A: If the project uses the network cable basically without shielding to do signal line, transmission distance will be affected.But it also depends on the actual project and the installation environment.The longest transmission distance can generally reach about 100m. It’s generally recommended that DMX512 signal line is best to use shielded twisted-pair signal cable.
